In the 2020 financial year, the Bonifatiuswerk supported Catholics in the German, Northern European and Baltic diaspora with 13 million euros. Despite a noticeable decline in collections due to coronavirus, the Catholic aid organisation was able to support 771 projects due to an unwavering willingness to donate.

Support from the Bonifatiuswerk

In the diaspora regions of Germany, Northern Europe and in Estonia and Latvia, 65 building projects were sponsored with 2.5 million euros, 570 projects of the aid for children and youths with 1.7 million euros and 107 projects of the faith aid with 830,000 euros. The transport aid sponsored 29 BONI buses for community work to the amount of 560,000 euros. Missionary initiatives and religious education received grants amounting to 1.9 million euros, while project support was given 405,000 euros, support for pastoral care 147,000 euros and earmarked funds 960,000 euros. From earmarked funds of the Diaspora Commission, around 4.1 million euros were passed on to projects in Northern Europe.

Revenue of the Bonifatiuswerk

The Bonifatiuswerk funds the sponsorship of these projects with revenue from collections (2.77 million euros), donations/fees/bequests and endowments (7.49 million euros) and from funds of the Diaspora Commission. “At 14.35 million euros, our income from funds decreased by around 930,000 compared to the previous year. This change is mainly due to the decline in collections, which fell by 43.9 per cent (-2.2 million euros) to 2.775 million euros. Fortunately, we were able to record an increase in donations not earmarked for a specific purpose by 848,000 euros to 2.99 million euros. Income from bequests has increased by around 53.3 per cent to 2.6 million euros,” said Managing Director Ingo Imenkämper, describing the changed income situation. First communicants gave 709,000 million euros and confirmands gave 353,000 euros for projects of the aid for children and youths. The nationwide diaspora collection raised 1.6 million euros.
