CATHOLIC PRIESTS IN GERMANY DONATE 5.3 MILLION EUROS
19.01.2021
To support priests and deacons in Central, Eastern and Northern Europe, Catholic priests in Germany donate one per cent of their salary each month. With these funds, the Diaspora Commission of German Bishops supports financially weak diaspora dioceses with 5.3 million euros. The funds are used to subsidise the salaries of priests and deacons working in pastoral care, as well as for transport and building grants for them.
The priests and pastoral care in Northern Europe are supported with 4.6 million euros and in Central and Eastern Europe with 690,000 euros. Around 2.7 million euros are needed to subsidise the salaries of the priests and deacons currently in active service in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. 350,000 euros have been earmarked for the purchase of vehicles and 1.55 million euros for the construction and maintenance of flats for priests. The Vicar General of Paderborn Alfons Hardt, who is also the chairman of the allocation committee, regards the financial aid as a strong sign of cross-border solidarity. He thanked all priests for their valuable support.
