Around 200.000 children celebrate their First Communion every year in the weeks after Easter. On this very important and special day for them, they make a donation to the children's aid of the Bonifatiuswerk in the spirit of "Helping by sharing". These donations are used to support children’s hospice services, children’s homes, children's villages, religious holiday camps and youth welfare institutions in regions where very few Catholics live. In 2018 the children collected 1.8 million euros nationwide.

"Jesus, tell us about God"

The First Communion campaign is under the motto of "Jesus, tell us about God". The essence of the 2020 First Communion campaign is about the boy Jesus meeting the scribes in the temple, as the Evangelist Luke tells us (Luke 2:41-52). Telling stories about God – as Jesus showed us in the temple – is the central theme of the preparation for First Communion. And yet it is not only catechists who repeatedly ask the question how we can speak of God today and what attributions we give him.

Every year the Bonifatiuswerk develops a new theme and accompanying materials for the First Communion catechesis in the parishes. With the annual theme and the accompanying brochure, the Bonifatiuswerk provides those responsible in the parishes with help for their catechesis. The material is prepared by an advisory committee for religious education studies, which consists of theologians, catechists and also lecturers.
