This week 19 young men and women in Paderborn prepared for their mission abroad in Northern Europe. As part of the traineeship programme of the Bonifatiuswerk, they are going abroad to Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Norway and Sweden in order to get to know the Church in the diaspora and support Catholic facilities.

They come from eight federal states and eleven dioceses in Germany. They are united by the spirit of discovery, the thirst for adventure and the determination to do some good. They are going as bearers of hope. In the valedictory service, in his interpretation of the Gospel of the Stilling of the Storm (Matthew 14:22-33), Monsignore Georg Austen invited the trainees to look forward courageously and to grasp the outstretched hand of Jesus. “As Jesus stretched out his hand to Peter who was sinking, so he also stretches out his hand to you. You can trust that God will always be at your side, wherever you are and in whatever situation you find yourselves.” All 19 trainees are feeling at home in their countries of assignment and are enjoying a good, enriching experience.

Every year, with the “Traineeship in the North” project (www.praktikum-im-norden.de) the Bonifatiuswerk gives young people the opportunity to gain experience in church institutions in Northern Europe and the Baltic States for several months.
